Gen Y - 9 Month Retention
Congratulations!
Your new apprentice technician has been with you for 9 months and will be coming up on their one year anniversary very soon. By now you have decided that they are a valued employee and would like them to stay in your dealership's family. You have invested considerable time and money in this new apprentice. How do you keep them? Remember this is a new generation of employee, the Gen Y'ers are born between 1981 and 1995. They are sharp, smart, demanding and adventurous. Kind of like the '60's generation with more technology.
Below are some suggestions to assist in retaining your "Gen Y" technician:
Talk with your technician, encourage their values. Although financial incentives are priority other factors share the same importance, such as family/work balance, personal development and education.
Let them know you value their dedication to your dealership. Explain how their efforts benefit them directly. Remind them how their role affects CSI, bonuses etc. Support and encourage their efforts in the workplace.
Continue to train them. They love to learn. They also want to know how to improve because they want to get up to speed so they can add value.
Continue to mentor and provide feedback and support. Give direction and step back, give direction and step back.
Keep in mind that Gen Y'ers are loyal as long as they are entertained, encouraged and acknowledged.
If you have an annual review, let them know you will be contacting them closer to their one year anniversary to set up their review date and time.
